About Chronicle

A free encyclopedia of the events that shaped our planet, written for curious readers.

Chronicle tells the story of Earth and its people one event at a time: the asteroid that ended the age of dinosaurs, the first cave paintings, the rise and fall of empires, revolutions, disasters and discoveries, right up to the present day.

Every article follows the same format, so you can find what you need quickly:

  • an At a glance box with when and where it happened, the key figures and the outcome;
  • a clear narrative of the background, the event itself and what followed;
  • a short timeline of the key dates;
  • answers to common questions, and the sources we used.

You can explore by era, follow the full timeline of world history, or search for an event, person or place.

Who writes Chronicle

Chronicle is written and edited by the Chronicle Editorial Team. We work from standard reference works and the scholarship they summarise, and we say so when historians disagree or when numbers are only estimates. Read our editorial policy to see how we research, check and correct articles.
